WHAT IS WORLD REFUGEE DAY?

Every year World Refugee Day takes place on June 20. It is a day to commemorate the strength and courage of over 60 million women, men and children around the world who were forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. All over the world this day is marked by a wide range of cultural, educational and sports events with and for refugees. This year the events organized on the occasion of World Refugee Day in Belgium and in the rest of the world will take place under the slogan “We stand #WithRefugees”!

2016 WORLD REFUGEE THEME = “WE STAND #WithRefugees

World Refugee Day’s aim is to build empathy and understanding of people who were forced to flee their homes by seeing them as they are: ordinary people who went through hardship. Despite all the obstacles that life threw at them, refugees have hopes and dreams just like you and me. Because who does not dream of being able to take care of their children, to provide them with a better future, to have access to proper education or to be able to find a new job? Most importantly, everyone is looking for a place to call “home”.

Will you stand #WithRefugees?
Every day, war forces thousands of families to flee their homes.
People like you – people like me.
To escape the violence, they have to leave everything behind.
Everything except for two things: their hopes and dreams for a safer future.
We believe every refugee should have the opportunity to feel safe again.
We stand together #WithRefugees. Will you stand #WithRefugees too?
